Footscray on the Edge
I had a piece in the Footscray Public Art Festival – ‘Footscray on the Edge’.
The ‘Peoples’ Flag of Footscray’ is a mongrel flag, a mix of 18 nationalities representing the colourful cultural mashup that is Footscray.
I researched the migrant population of Footscray through public records, selected the most populous groups combined with the original inhabitants: the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
I then reinterpreted the Australian flag using the colours and symbols of all 18 flags.
The flag was created by a flag specialist maker, almost 3 metres long.
It flew over Footscray Town hall for a month during November to December 2012.
Stickers were also printed so people could display it on their car or shop window.
The festival was a collaboration with Kendal Henry, public art curator and artist from New York.
I was also invited to do the key pieces of design collateral for the event opening. The wallet and fold out poster/brochure utilised the flag motif, inset with artists work and street textures.
